On Saturday March 23rd, Odyssey House Louisiana hosted their second annual Prophylactic Prom—a fun and funky prom-themed fundraiser, but probably with many more condoms present than your average high school dance.
Odyssey House Louisiana is a nonprofit located in New Orleans. As a behavioral healthcare provider, their mission is to provide holistic and client-centered services in a safe environment that address the full continuum of special care needs for the state. OHL’s encompassing system of care includes detox, treatment, behavioral and medical healthcare, life-skills, counseling, and case management — all focused on educating, equipping, and empowering their community.
OHL aims to develop and sustain innovative, evidence-based substance use disorder and health services in New Orleans and the state of Louisiana. Included in this focus is encouraging more open, honest conversations on topics relating to sexual health and providing access to resources. Prophylactic Prom was an opportunity to have fun and break the mold of a traditional fundraiser — while encouraging open conversations around sexual health and destigmatizing what is often perceived as “taboo.”
The main event was the presentation of prom court, which featured attendees decked in custom condom couture designed from condoms donated by ONE®. The participant with the winning condom attire wears the Prophylactic Prom Crown and reigns supreme until next year’s event! Proceeds from Prophylactic Prom will support Odyssey House Louisiana’s encompassing system of care and its new facility, set to open in summer 2019. The event also featured performances from popular New Orleans Mardi Gras dance krewes, an open dance floor, and raffle prizes.
We’re so grateful for Odyssey House’s extraordinary partnership in hosting Project CONDOM. Project CONDOM is a ONE® Condoms initiative to encourage more talk and less stigma about sexual health by supporting and collaborating with communities to host condom fashion shows.
